Company is about Robert and his “good and crazy married friends” who plan a surprise party for his 35th birthday. This concept musical unfolds going back and forth in Bob’s memories and the present. Originally set in the ‘70s, the story is now performed in 2020. In order to achieve a contemporary mood, I will create a unit set that reflects the modernity of the new era by using sophisticated color choices and predominant use of geometric shapes. While the set evokes a harmonic simplicity, it can also be very contrasting. Transiting between the good and the bad things, the plot shows that the simple things sometimes are intricate. New York city’s life will be explored with parallel lines and an overlapped colorful background. Fluid transitions between scenes will challenge Bobby to consider the meaning of “being alive” and accept the love that comes to him.
